RE:Design Christmas

November 13, 2019 by Perthshire Creates

The Christmas RE:Design Market is a new event we’re organising with Zero Waste Perth. An eco-conscious Christmas shopping opportunity at the Zero Waste Space at the The Bike Station, Perth.

Running on Saturday 30 November 2019 from 10-4pm and free to enter, this eco-conscious Christmas shopping event will showcase the work of over 10 locally based artists whose ethos and focus is to create original design-led work using mainly re-purposed materials of all kinds.

From jewellery reworked from silver cutlery, clocks from bike parts and accessories from outdated vinyl banners,  there will be a selection of items which are a genuine alternative sustainable gift option, and visitors will get to see how the creative process adds true value to materials which otherwise may have been discarded.

Artists are increasingly considering how their creative practice impacts the environment and the Christmas RE:Design Market is a great way to showcase the ingenious ways artists develop their work around re-using a whole variety of materials, and the value of how original creative ideas combined with their talent create beautiful and functional artworks.

Fiona McBain, Zero Waste Perth Coordinator, said: We all know Christmas can be such a wasteful time, so this year we are offering the Perth community something different. The Re:Design market is the perfect antidote to Black Friday shopping and the crass consumerism of recent years. This is an opportunity to buy original, thoughtful gifts from local producers who have created beautiful things by breathing new life into things many of us would simply have thrown away.

The Christmas RE:Design Market follows on from the annual Perthshire Creates Christmas Design Market, both events are aimed to encourage people to support, value and buy from artists, designers and makers as well as to shop locally. The RE:Design Market also falls on St Andrew’s Fair Saturday, Scotland’s contribution to the global celebration of Fair Saturday which is a global mobilisation that aims to create a positive social impact following Black Friday and at the end of the Just A Card – Indie Week, a UK wide campaign highlighting the same message.

Taking place at the Zero Waste Space, a new community workshop hub for the people of Perth, formed through collaboration between Zero Waste Perth and the Bike Station Perth, this is an ideal location for this new event.
