#HighestBookLaunch for Walking with Ghosts
June 13, 2017 by Perthshire Creates
Walking with Ghosts: New Prose & Poetry from Perthshire & Beyond by Alan J. Laing is the latest publication to come from Perthshire based publishers Tippermuir Books. A collection of writings, all of which involve walking of some kind and many of them invoking ghostly presences or memories.
Walking throughout Perthshire is a much-loved activity for many, and to celebrate the book launch (on Wed 14 June), the author, Alan J Laing, will lead a party of walkers to the summit of Ben Lawers where he will launch his new book with readings and the obligatory tipple.
The walking party will take photographs en route to the #HighestBookLaunch, and will run a textual and visual commentary on Twitter (signal allowing!) At 1,214m (3,984ft), Ben Lawers is the highest Munro ‘in the southern part of the Highlands’, and towers over a panoramic vista that takes in Loch Tay, the Cairngorms & Glencoe, and whilst an unusual location for a book launch, is fitting for the #Highest (known) Book Launch of Walking with Ghosts.
Author, Alan Laing, is a former English teacher who lives near Perth. He has written short plays for young people which have been performed in a dozen countries. In the last four years, he has won three awards from Mountaineering Scotland for his fictional stories involving walking, climbing and mountains, as well as one award for poetry. Climbing and walking have been a lifelong hobby of his, pursued with friends and with Duke of Edinburgh groups.
Walking with Ghosts includes a ‘Foreword’ by Neil Reid of Mountaineering Scotland who writes: One of the perks of being editor of Scottish Mountaineer magazine is the pleasure of publishing the winners in the annual Mountaineering Scotland writing competition. The standard of entries is always high and the standard of the winners higher still. And Alan Laing has won so often – in both prose and poetry sections – that I’ve even toyed with the idea of banning him to give others a chance. But then I think how much I enjoy his writing and consign that idea to the bin – where it most assuredly belongs.
The book is beautifully illustrated throughout with maps, line drawings, and cartoons by Robert A. Hands.
Walking with Ghosts is priced at £8.99 and is available online via the Tippermuir Books website, from bookshops and various cafes, farm shops & gift shops throughout Perthshire.
