Shift and Spin Exhibition

April 24, 2015 by Perthshire Creates

Students from Edinburgh College of Art have been using Stanley Mills, the former cotton mill just north of Perth, as the inspiration and focus for their annual micro-residency and exhibition, Shift and Spin.

Run by the Intermedia Programme at ECA, in partnership with Historic Scotland, the project is the first of its kind at Stanley Mills. The exhibition will include a performance by a local school choir, a costumed procession though the village of Stanley, weaving, sculpture, drawing, installation, film and stories that respond to the building, its setting and its history.

Among the artists exhibiting work at the Mill will be Susan Mowatt, Zoe Walker & Neil Bromwich.

Stanley Mills is one the best-preserved examples of a mill from the 18th century industrial revolution. Situated on the banks of the River Tay and built in 1786, the Mill processed cotton at the height of the industrial revolution and produced textiles for 200 years, before closing in 1989.

Susan Mowatt, artist and Intermedia Lecturer at ECA, said: “The project with Historic Scotland at Stanley Mills offers students and staff from ECA a fantastic opportunity to make work in the public realm in response to a specific historic site. We have enjoyed research visits to Perthshire over the winter months and students have been fascinated to learn not only about Stanley Mills but the local area too. We have all learned a lot more about salmon in the River Tay and the ospreys at Loch of the Lowes, for example.”

Fiona Davidson, Learning Development Officer at Historic Scotland, said: “This project has provided students at ECA the opportunity to engage with the rich history and heritage of Stanley Mills in an innovative new way. The unique exhibition will also provide members of the public an insight into the Mill’s industrial past.”
